Sometimes it feels like you might spend all year just waiting for the next Christmas day where you get that time to spend with loved ones, give gifts to show how much they mean to you and most importantly, you’ve got a few days off work to spend at home feeling festive! Chrismas day can go by so quickly, you spend weeks preparing, all day cooking them then come the evening it’s all over. That doesn’t mean you have to turn off all the Christmas lights, take down the cards and put away the Christmas cheer until next year, though.
The week in between Christmas and New Year is one of the best times of the year! You have a food hangover that lasts the week (to the point where you forget what feeling hungry feels like) and you get to bask in new gifts and spend as much time at home with the family, both two-legged and four-legged alike. Needless to say, Boxing Day is a family fave all-round.

Why we love Boxing Day

Boxing Day really should be named the official second day of Christmas since it might as well be. Sometimes Christmas can feel a little manic with all that rushing around but Boxing Day is a day of rest and a day of eating leftovers so there’s very little cooking involved. Even what’s left of the cheeseboard you overstocked can last you the next few days until it starts to look a bit bare!
We love Boxing Day because of the food, the time to sit back and relax, not to mention those delicious sales that hit the shops. A morning of getting some of the best deals you’ll see all year followed by cheese, crackers and leftover turkey with chunky chips, what could be better? Surrounded by family for Christmas Day part two, Boxing Day can be extra special as it’s a little more low-key with extra time to unwind and enjoy yourself.

A Boxing Day Dog Walk

Since all the hard work was done the day before, Boxing Day is a time when you can reap those rewards and kick back. There’s no better time than venturing out with the family on a nice Boxing Day dog walk. Boxing Day tends to be quite quiet, everyone is often still inside and recovering from yesterday’s festivities and everyone you do pass is doing exactly the same thing as you with their family!
You spent yesterday eating, exchanging gifts and doing things the whole family enjoys so why not treat your pup on Boxing Day and do one of their favourite activities with them?

Benefits of a dog walk

Not only is a Boxing Day dog walk great for your pup to burn off all that extra energy they have from sleeping off a busy Christmas day but it also gets you out of the house to shed any of the stress from the busy period and just enjoy that time together.

Show off all of your new gear

As a child, you might have asked for toys and games for Christmas, anything that’s popular or would hold your attention for five minutes. Age makes us more practical and there’s nothing quite so satisfying as taking your new wellies for a spin or putting on your new waterproof jacket to test it out against the chill of the December air. Not only can you try out your new coat but you can also take your pooch’s new jacket for a try to keep all the damp and maybe even snow off them.
Nothing quite beats a white Christmas - except for a snowy Boxing Day when you have everything you need to stay nice and cosy for the whole walk! You and the whole family can get home after a nice walk and warm up, while your pup snoozes in front of the fire until the next round of food is being served!

Work off that Christmas dinner

Everyone knows the diet goes right out the window for Christmas, maybe just for the day or maybe for the whole week but it’s a great excuse to not restrict yourself and just enjoy time with family and friends. Being a pup parent is the best excuse to get outside during the festive period - the benefit of having a canine companion is really helpful to your own health, not just theirs.

Being a dog parent doesn’t turn off for any occasion, birthdays, Christmas - name any event you like and your pooch will still need their basic care which often includes a walk, especially if your chosen canine child has lots of energy to burn. They need their daily walks to keep them healthy but they have the added benefit of keeping you healthy too. Christmas can be quite a slovenly time, we want to relax but there are still walks to be had. Regular exercise keeps our resting heart rate down and it helps us shed any extra calories so if your dog is fit and healthy then so are you!

Time with the whole family

Christmas is all about family and loved ones and our furry family members are as much a part of that as anyone else. When it’s too cold to walk your dog and you’re snuggled inside in the warm, just think of how much your canine companion would appreciate that stroll with the family. Instead of hiding away, find your warmest coat and get out there to spend time together. Most of the year is spent maybe dishing out walking duties so that only one or two members of the family take them on a walk any given day.
Dogs are social animals, they’re loyal and love their families so you can get them all the gifts you like, a nice coat or some brand new toys. One of the best gifts you can give your pup is a walk with the whole family. Having everyone there will absolutely make their day and it only has to take a fraction of yours.
