Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream

Ice cream is in a strange category of its own when it boils down to understanding if your dog can eat it or not. It’s not usually toxic like other foods such as grapes or chocolate, but it’s also not an ideal dog treat and tends to lead to stomach upsets.

Ice cream contains dairy and it’s the lactose in dairy that will usually upset your pup’s stomach. It’s rare that there’s enough theobromine to cause any real damage, but it all depends on the quantity eaten. Low fat ice creams can also contain artificial sweeteners like xylitol which is also toxic to our four-legged friends. If you want to be safe, it’s easier just to avoid giving your dog any ice cream sold for the consumption of people.
