As the warmer weather arrives once more, it brings with it the joy of longer dog walks, garden antics and attempting to keep your furry friend cool. Their luscious coats are perfect in winter, but as the sun makes an appearance, their coats could be become an annoyance and health concern if not groomed regularly!
Owners know the importance of a regular visit to the groomers, but there’s often a lack of understanding around how often you should groom your dog, particularly in the warmer months.

How to Get Your Pup ‘Summer Ready’

Getting summer ready doesn’t just mean trimming down their nails or choosing an on-theme collar. Seeing your pup roam around in their thick coats can make you feel uneasy, but don’t be in too much of a hurry to grab that shaver!
Dogs’ coats have several layers to protect them from the heat – acting as a natural cooling system, which can only be effective through frequent grooming.
Whether you’re a frequent home groomer or leave it to the professionals to transform your pup, there are a few grooming tips to consider in order to keep them cool.

How Often Should You Groom your Dog in the Warmer Months?

Much depends on their coat type. Whilst frequent trips to the doggy spa should be made, regular brushing at home can also help lighten their load in the sun. Brushing around 2-3 times a week, and more so for heavier coated dogs, helps to prevent any knots forming and removes the unnecessary hair that hasn’t had a chance to shed.
As a rule of thumb, the below is a good guide to follow:
  1. Curly and Wavy-Coated Dogs – every 4 – 6 weeks to prevent tangles being formed, reducing their protection against the sun.

  2. Double-Coated Dogs brush every few days and make frequent trips to the groomers.

  3. Short-Coated Dogs – they will shed naturally, but at least one trip to the groomers in the summer should be made!

Be Careful When Grooming at Home

If you have a particularly wild pooch, a supposed pampering session can quickly become stressful! Whether you’re in a rush or if they’ve ran out of peanut butter on their licking matt, it’s often better to leave it to the groomers to save you both the headache.
There are a handful of errors that can occur with trimming or washing their fur at home – particularly as their coats hold essential oils for their skin. Stripping these oils by over washing your pup can leave their skin irritated and dry. Combined with over cutting their hair and the harsh rays of the sun, they will be far from being summer ready.

Grooming with Clippers

A perfectly pruned pooch is a sight every owner loves, but grooming at home with clippers can cause a few hiccups rather than the ideal trim! From them chewing on the cord, trimming over-sensitive areas, or using blunt blades, there are endless issues that can be caused with clippers – which is why we would highly recommend leaving their grooming to the specialists! More so for double-coated breeds with their undercoats.
To help relieve your four-legged friend in the summer, brush through their coat in between their grooming appointments – removing any tangles and allowing their coat to breathe and keep them cool.

Leave it to the Professionals

Professional groomers know everything required to ensure their coats are healthy and cool for the summer! From their hair type to breed, they will safely trim your pup’s hair to help the heat become more bearable and keep them comfortable for their sunny walks and more.
