Seasoned dog owners understand the uphill battle of keeping dog hair at bay and keeping their furniture intact. If you’re searching for dog-friendly interior design tips in lieu of bringing a brand-new loveable addition into your family, look no further! We’ve put together our top tips to create a harmonious living space that your dog will feel at home in – even if they may not be allowed on the sofa!
How to Make Your House Dog Friendly
There’s nothing better than hearing an excited pooch roam around your home, after all it’s their home too, right?! So, it’s only fair they have dog-friendly furniture and accessories to keep them happy and out of mischief.
Consider Your Flooring
Your floors really take a battering on an average day with a pooch. A rule of thumb for pet owners who are choosing new flooring styles; always remember the harder the better!
Carpets are a flooring type to avoid, particularly for adorable pups who are just learning the first few steps of potty training. As dogs shed their hair and bring in unwanted outdoor visitors, it becomes harder to remove the dirt from the carpets, ultimately causing a breeding ground for bacteria!
Tiles or wooden flooring are the perfect choices to help you both live in bliss! They’re ideal for easily wiping up any muck or accidents they may have had without leaving unwanted odours in your home. Tiles are also the ideal napping area during the hot weather – it’s a win all round (a quick tip while we’re on the subject: dog cooling mats are always a good option when the weather gets warmer).
Dog-Friendly Furniture
Whether you allow them on the sofa or not, dog-friendly furniture is key! From their natural odours to their hair, there’s no doubt it will end up on the sofa or other fabric furnishings.
The best dog-friendly furniture fabric for your upholstery would be leather or low-pile fabrics. Both of these options are extremely easy to clean and almost claw-proof – a quick wipe and vacuum down, and your sofa is as good as new.
Your furnishing colour is another thing to consider when you’re welcoming a pooch to your home. We would recommend avoiding light colours such as whites and soft greys as they are obviously more prone to showing claw marks, pet hairs and any stains. Whilst they may have their own dog bed, there will inevitably be times they jump on the sofa to unwind with you – keep your sofa colour darker to avoid any issues!
Invest in Your Vacuum Cleaner & Dog Brush!
Dogs really are the centre of our worlds, but we could really do without their hair getting lodged everywhere! It’s a false economy to skimp on a vacuum cleaner if you own pets – see it as an investment. Most vacuum cleaners now have pet hair-friendly settings, allowing their hair to be removed in a few strokes.
To avoid constantly having to vacuum, we would also recommend a dog brush. Whilst it won’t stop your doggo shedding hair, it can reduce the amount of hair they lose and you can control how many stray hairs land on your floor, coat or elsewhere. Better yet, they will absolutely love the attention and interaction they’re having with their owner!
For when they’ve been an extra good boy/girl, or as an owner you may be tight on time, a trip to the groomers will have them looking fresh and shedding less too!
Be Aware of Cleaning Products
Keeping homes clean and tidy often involves chemical-based cleaning products, from all-purpose surface cleaners to carpet shampoos. Your dog’s curiosity will have them licking or attempting to eat an array of surfaces and furniture in your home. Paired with toxic cleaning products it could cause your pooch’s stomach to turn or force you into an expensive visit to the vets.
Choosing natural-based cleaning products will still help remove the bacteria and mess of their accidents without causing further health issues down the line.
Whether they’re excited to see you, or they’re firmly in their ‘zoomies’ phase, it’s likely your pooch will bump into different furnishings or potentially trip or attempt to munch on visible wires.
Hide visible cables behind furniture or use cable protectors to avoid any mishaps. The same can be said for sharp objects! Keep away any potential dangers they can get their paws or teeth into to further minimise any unwelcome trips to the vets.
