Questions

  • What is a raw diet?
  • What are the benefits of a raw diet?
A raw diet for dogs is shrouded in mystery and uncertainty, which makes it a questionable subject for many pet parents. Most reasons to not offer your pooch a raw dinner is because of more humanistic reasons like hygiene, lack of understanding about the subject which can contribute to a less positive attitude towards raw diets. When actually, a raw food diet is one of the healthiest meals you can offer your pet. We’ve popped together the most common myths associated with raw dog food diets and we’re busting them right here!

What is a raw diet?

Here at Jollyes, our Raw Store offers a wide range of frozen raw meals to present to your pooch. It’s bursting with all the goodness and nutrients your pet needs, and the fact it’s available to store frozen makes it super easy to serve in a pinch (just make sure to defrost before dishing it up to your pooch). Simply take out of the freezer what you need that day! It’s a great alternative to wet and dry food, but if you’re making the transition to a raw diet, it’s best to be done in one of two ways: a straight swap or a gradual transition. If your pet has any history of digestive issues, a gradual transition is the recommended way of easing them into a raw dog food diet.

What are the benefits of a raw diet?

There’s a whole host of benefits to a raw diet for your dog! From a healthy coat and skin to digestive wellbeing and firmer stools, there’s many reasons pet parents look to a raw diet for their dog.

Myth #1 It’s so expensive!

The price tags on a raw diet compete with premium dry or wet pet food prices! You’re investing in your dog’s health so the benefits of such a diet can pay for itself. A healthy pet means a happy pet. There’s a variety of products to fit different budgets, and our frozen selection is ideal as the food keeps for much longer whilst frozen which prevents waste.

Myth #2 It’s unhygienic & could give my dog salmonella!

A salmonella infection in dogs is extremely uncommon, as there is zero tolerance for any strains to be detected when dog food is tested for it. It’s key to ensure you clean your pup’s dog bowls between meals and always make sure to wash your hands and your utensils after handling raw meat to prevent bacteria spreading, making the handling of raw meat no different to how you’d handle it for your cooking!

Myth #3 It’s inconvenient and a hassle to portion!

It’s actually more convenient! Like most things, it simply becomes routine (and one that’s worth getting into with all the health benefits available to your pet). If you opt for frozen food, it needs to be popped out of the freezer to defrost before serving and voila! If you’re concerned about portioning, you can buy smaller formats that make for a quicker defrost and don’t require exact measurements. Feeding amounts are only a guide, so measurements don’t need to be exact every single time.

Myth #4 You need a huge freezer to store it!

Nope – not true! Opt for smaller portion sizes that will fit in the space you’re working with and don’t forget your local Jollyes store does it all for you! Just pop into your local store and buy what you can fit into your freezer whenever it suits you.

Hopefully, you now have a broader understanding of a raw food diet for dogs, and how the above commonly-circulated myths are easily proven to be false. A raw diet is still a hugely misunderstood topic, but the host of health benefits it can offer your dog make it something seriously worth considering.
